Initial Explorations

Still exploring the world of WordPress. I guess I thought it would be a bit simpler than this but that’s all part of the journey, isn’t it? I spent a couple hours this morning going through other WordPress blogs to get an idea of the community. My main feeling? Overwhelming. It’s becoming a bit of a theme.  To make myself feel a little better, I started my 23 things twitter, something I’m much more familiar with.

Ah…finally something I get. I follow some public libraries, news outlets, etc. and immediately feel better about my tech abilities. Still have some exploring to do before I post an official twitter ‘thing’ but I’m already making mental lists of all the ways libraries could use twitter. And, look! I even (posted, linked, connected?) it to my blog.

This blog on the other hand, we got some working out to do.

I also wanted to take some time to reflect on something I read in Chapter 3 of our book this week regarding the feminization of the library profession and how it has actually downgraded the status of library and information science throughout history. What Rubin seemed to be saying was that because librarians have been predominantly women, the profession was looked at as nurturing and weak, and never really given the respect it deserved. Just as far as education goes, I have to agree that the librarians are not regarded the same as most professions that require master’s degrees. My question is: would the library and information science environment be of more significance if it was predominantly operated by men?
